A month of very mixed weather, with fine sunny days, a few showers, strong cold
winds and the first of the Winter frosts in the last week
SIGHTINGS
Birds: Carrion Crows, Magpies, Jays, Buzzards, Black-headed Gulls, Common Gulls,
Heron, Tawny Owls, Sparrowhawk, Green/Great Spotted Woodpecker, Wood Pigeons,
Stock Doves, Collared Doves, Nuthatches, Treecreepers, Wrens, Goldcrest, Robins,
Blackbirds, Song Thrushes, Dunnocks, Greenfinches, Chaffinches, Goldfinches,
Siskins, Coal/Blue/Great/Long-tailed Tits.
Mammals: Grey Squirrels, Fox, Roe Deer.
Insects/Spiders Wood Lice, Midges, Bumble Bees, Garden Spiders.
Butterflies/Moths: Species of day flying Moths, Large White, Red Admiral, Peacock.
Plants: Rowan Berries, Holly Berries, Ivy Seed heads, Bell Heather.
Pond Life: Pond Skaters.
Dragonfly/Damselfly: Small Red, Emperor.
Fungi: Fly Agaric, The Blusher, Yellow-brown Knight-cap, Bay Bolette, Plums and
Custard, The Sickener, Shaggy Ink-cap, Orange Shine Cap, Cauliflower Fungus, Manyzoned
Polypore, Slippery Jack, False Chanterelle.
Bat activity not recorded during October.
Tawny Owls were very vocal at dusk
NATURE FACT
Fungi are remarkable organisms, they are present in all habitats, with each specie
connected with a particular location or host. Recent estimates suggest that there are
over 1.5 million species.

SITE MANAGEMENT
Coppicing of Willow and Birch scrub on the treeline near the boardwalk continued with
the purpose of creating a varied age structure through the woodland area. This is an
ongoing project. The brash was burned and wood piles built from the logs.
